HOODIE (Perfect Hoodie)
2019 - 2021 - 701377 - $90ReleasedBackground: The YZY GAP Hoodie was the retail result of years of research and development.
"In July of 2019, as Ye was working at home, Ye conceived of an idea that struck him as genius: the perfect hoodie. Slightly cropped at the waist, heavy as a winter coat, it would be like comfort food, biblical in its ability to soothe but futuristic in its reach. In a color like flax or dusty stone—a palette Jesus might have worn—it would be made for the masses, sold for $60 or so, folded and stacked on tables like loaves of bread... hoped to sell this garment somewhere like Costco, which he admires for its broad reach and its democratic piles of merchandise. "I like Costco as an idea. I like Walmart, too... In his "Follow God" video, Ye wears a bright orange hoodie and a beige overstuffed muslin vest that looks a little goofy, as though handmade. The hoodie was the latest iteration of the perfect hoodie, but the vest had stolen Ye's attention... By January of 2020, Ye was convinced that his puffer vest had the beginnings of an entire collection. "It spawned his new language," says Chandler, who was still begging him to put the perfect hoodie into production. Ye's response, according to Chandler: "You can't take three years off and then come out with a hoodie." - Wall Street Journal
The Hoodie came in six colorways: Black, Blue, Red, Purple, Brown, and Light Brown, each retailing for $90. Subsequent price drops brought this price to $80 and then $60 when Ye terminated his deal.
The initial release was followed by a restock of Black and Blue colors, coinciding with the "Heaven and Hell" music video. The music video was both a visual for the song as well as a commercial for the hoodies (styled by Ras Bartram), which Gap ran during the NCAA championship on ESPN on January 11th, 2022.
Ye later revealed this led to over $14 million in sales of the hoodie in a discussion with Gap’s Board ("We sold 14 million hoodies at $80 with no logo on it, off of one commercial and never ran the commercial again, that's insane").
This restock also included updated stock images as opposed to the original images, which were sample hoodies scanned by Gentle Giant Studios on November 11th, 2020 (Gentle Giant Studios wanted 10k to make each model scan website-ready).
The Hoodie would also be used in the Yeezy Gap Engineered by Balenciaga Chapter 1 Ad.
The Hoodies ended with a final clear-out drop, which had a messy stock of Black Redyes of all the other colors.
The Perfect Hoodie later went on to be worn by multiple celebrities, from Justin Bieber to Hayden Christensen (Becoming one of his favorite hoodies that he still wears now).
The kids' version would be worn by Saint West.
Compared to sample versions, the release version has a much more true-to-size fit.
